Scope and content
The Trilateral Commission (TC) was founded in 1973 by private citizens of Western Europe, Japan and North America to foster closer cooperation among these three regions on common problems. It seeks to improve public understanding of such problems, to support proposals for handling them jointly and to nurture habits and practices of working together among these regions. Mary Robinson is initial point of contact in Ireland as the TC is being established, and becomes the Irish representative on the Executive Committee, 21/08/1973. In January 1981 Mary Robinson resigns because of what she perceived to be imbalanced membership, lack of real commitment to leadership and creativity in examining North/South issues and because of personal influence exerted by Dr Henry Kissinger. Material is arranged chronologically and consists of correspondence, reports, programmes, background information and other material relating to the setting up and work of the TC.
