Scope and content

Typewritten copy of the 19th century rebel song/transportation ballad 'The Peeler and the Goat', with the annotation 'This probably the original typescript handed to JMH [Canon Hayes] by Archbishop's secretary.' In the book 'Father John Hayes' by Stephen Rynne [p. 198], it is noted that Archbishop John Harty sent this to the presbytery in the middle of April 1946, likely as an intimation that Father Hayes was to become the next parish priest of Bansha following the recent passing of Canon Byrnes; Father Hayes was appointed parish priest later that month.
