Letter from Peter Ormsby, son, to Thomas Ormsby of Ballinamore, Co. Mayo. From Piers Hill Barracks [Edinburgh] in which he writes "I have this moment received a letter from Adam which mentions his safe arrival in Quebec, having had a very tedious passage of fourteen weeks. They were then setting out for Montreal, a distance of near 200 miles, which they were to travel in boats up the River St. Laurence, at night go on shore, sleep in farm houses there along the river ... I suppose Anthony has told you of our journey here which was very unexpected ... I have done every thing in my power to get out of the army on the 5 spell and half pay but I have not yet been able to accomplish it ... I intend attending the different medical classes here during the winter and so rub up on my Latin and surgery a little and my ideas are if possible after to go to Paris for a few months and then return and sit down fully licensed to kill or cure ... should it be convenient to you to make me some allowance yearly ...
