Scope and content
Papers of the Ó Cathasaigh family, collected by Seán Ó Cathasaigh (1908-1988), relating to the craft of boat building in Connemara, specifically on Maínis (Mweenish) island. The Ó Cathasaigh/Casey family were well-known for their construction of Galway hookers, including the famous Bád Mór ('big boat') 'St. Patrick'. A graduate of University College Galway, Seán Ó Cathasaigh would go on to be a columnist for the socialist Irish-language newspaper An t-Éireannach (1936-1937) and a translator in Dáil Éireann.
