Letter from John McGahern c/o Parko, Tammite 13, Helsinki addressed to Patrick Gregory, Alfred A. Knopf, 501 Madison Ave., New York. McGahern describes the literary scene in in Dublin he writes that the 'McDaid world is such a jungle it's impossible.' He also describes Helsinki as 'rather beautiful' and goes on to write that the is a sense of 'provincialism and materialism and comfort. A sense of puritanism even in sex though the laws are among the more liberal in the world.' He also describes the Finn's drinking habits '...the whole nation seem to get methodically sozzeled every weekend in private, administered as some shock to the nervous system before plodding out into another dull week.'
