Scope and content

Mark Lynch of Renmore, Co. Galway, bought the Aughinish peninular and the Duras estate, including Cregboy, Cloosh and Geehy from James de Basterot in the early 19th century. On 4 May 1839 his son Patrick M Lynch purchased an interest held by the Church of Ireland, Bishop of Killaloe and Kilfenora, in the lands of Aughinish. Killomoran in the parish of Kilmacduagh was bought in 1840 from A H Lynch and others. During the 1850s, Patrick M Lynch purchased lands in 4 other townlands, Boherbee (1851), Cahererland (1853), Funshinmore (1854), and Cartrontrellick (1857) through the Encumbered Estates Court [see LE6/A/55]. John Wilson Lynch expanded the estate still further, when in 1873 he purchased lands in Roo Demesne, Leagh North and Shanclogh, formerly the property of the Daly family [see LE6/A/62]. These lands were resold in 1890 to the Land Commission. A loose sheet in LE6/B/543 lists lands in Co. Galway and premises in Galway city bought by Patrick M Lynch, and includes the purchase price and occasionally the name of the vendor. The Duras estate was over 5,000 acres. When residing at Duras, the Lynchs lived in Newtown Park or Duras Lodge, which was built c. 1795. Thomas Wilson Lynch inherited the Duras estate on the death of his father and sold it soon afterwards.
