Scope and content

Five field notebooks that document the social anthropological field study of the Harvard-Irish Mission in Clare carried out by a team of academics from Harvard in the 1930s. The material collected in Conrad Arensberg and Solon Kimball’s field work notebooks informed the now classic publications The Irish Countryman (1937), Family and Community in Ireland (1940, 1968, 2001). These texts are in continuous use by students, academics and scholars for research and teaching on Irish society, politics, demography, agriculture, family, religion and farming for example. Family and Community in Ireland is one of the most recognised and highly cited texts about Ireland.
