Scope and content

Transcript of a 11 September 1949 Radio Éireann broadcast by an unidentified Muintir na Tíre member about the organisation's Parish Plan for Agriculture, following up on Father Hayes' broadcast speech of the week prior (P134/12/1/2/4/24). The speaker states that 'You who live in towns in cities are more dependent on the farmers than are the farmers on you. From the surplus produced on the land you may hope to be fed.' The author writes of the Parish Plan: 'It is not a plan to enrich the farmer at the expense of the community; but a plan by which the property of the whole nation can be increased.' The speaker also notes that 'Muintir na Tíre does not pretend to have a specific remedy for all the ills of rural Ireland' but endeavours to encourage the people of a parish to plan and work together as a voluntary body in matters of common welfare.
